No. 3 It’s your duty to live Big. Get out of your own God-damn Way!

You belong in the driving seat of your life. It’s for you to route map the course to your destination and put your foot on the accelerator, remaining open and flexible to the road ahead. Sometimes our fears about what’s around the corner can stand in our way and this is when we’re called to feel that fear, transcend it and get out of our own way to reach our destination. To live an extraordinary life, we can’t be rabbits caught in our own headlamps, frozen by the scale of the opportunities that lie in front of us. We’ve got to get behind the wheel and that comes from transcending the ego to bow to our bigger life purpose and the duty we have to make a difference in our world.

It is something to behold when you first recognise your life purpose. You know when you’ve found it because you recognise that right up until that point you’ve been faking it all along tying yourself to jobs and relationships that just didn’t quite hit the sweetspot. To recognise your purpose is the greatest surrender to life and yet the most empowering. It’s like shedding the chains of a mundane existence to replace with a feather light mantle, by which your soul can take flight. But before I lose you, let me bring this No. 3 tip back down to Earth!

Ahem…How to find your purpose.

Surrender. Take your self to a place where you can hang your very own ‘Do not disturb sign’ on the door, be it your study, the beach or the anonymity of a coffee shop. Take pen to paper and let the inner journey begin, by asking yourself:

When am I at my best?

When do I feel in the flow?

When do I shine?

When does my heart swell with pride?

What am I doing when I lose all sense of time because I’m absorbed in the moment of doing what I love?

When have I been out of comfort zone, felt the fear and then delivered my best performance?

The latter is where your magic happens. This is your life worth living. This is where you were born to belong.

Once you’ve captured all until you can write or draw no more, take a step back to look for themes, patterns, similarities, consistencies and key words. From these create your Purpose Statement, “My Purpose is…..”

There’s no turning back. Once found, your purpose feels like your duty to carry out in the world, but the load feels lighter in life, because it’s a filter for sorting the wheat from the chaff. This knowing enables you to drop so much of your baggage as you redesign your life around serving your purpose. To be able to let go of jobs, energy vampires, collections of stuff, things that do not serve you is so liberating.

I was reminded only last week through conversation with a friend who’s on her path to living and breathing her life purpose that at times living up to your calling can be daunting. Sometimes, she finds herself as a trainer and coach asking, “What gives me the right to make a difference, to effect such change? Why should people listen to me?” This is the ‘rabbit caught in our own headlights syndrome’. This is where the ego needs to be kept in check by putting it in its place to serving a purpose that is greater than our personal needs. By striving to serve and believe in something bigger, it gives us the strength to be a champion of a cause that serves universal needs and makes a difference in our world. It is this duty which takes us on the path to leading an extraordinary life.

To write this post, I dug out my note book to remind myself of the above practical exercise of how I found my purpose and I’m so delighted that I captured this timeless quote from Marianne Williamson, (‘A Return to Love’) which was clearly meant for YOU!

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
